The doorbell is buzzing and someone is pounding on the door.

He tries to shut the sound out, but it won't go away.

He sits up, slips his feet in his slippers, and slowly walks to the door.

"I'm coming," he says, "I'm coming."

But he stops in the bathroom, to relieve himself.

He sees no reason to hurry.

The bathroom mirror shows him square-faced, crooked-nosed man with long hair and needing a shave.

The buzzer is still going when he reaches the door.

"Here I am," he says as he opens.

There's a woman of about his same age, standing on his doormat.

"You!" she says, pointing a finger .

She appears to be quite angry.

"Me?" he replies.

He's under the impression he saw her before.

"I'm Miss Castaigne," she explains, pointing somewhere down the hall. "I'm from 4D."

So maybe that's where he saw her.

"Can I be of assistance?" he asks.

It feels weird, standing there in front of her in a t-shirt and a pair of blue-striped boxers.

She rolls her eyes.

"Assistance?" she says, piqued. "Maybe you could be of assistance by turning down your fucking stereo?"

Only then he realizes the amps are blaring in the background, some string-heavy, bombastic stuff he is unable to place.

"Sounds like Haydn on acid, right?" he says.

Her features distend in quick smile, but she quickly resumes her irritated frown. "It's been hours!" she says.

He lifts a hand.

Her eyes follow his gesture, then she looks back in his eyes.

"Be so kind to wait a second," he says.

He goes back in the living room, and tries hopelessly to locate the stereo remote, in the mess of papers, books, discarded underwear, pizza boxes and sleeping cats. Then he shrugs and pulls the plug from the system, silencing it.

He goes back to the door.

Miss Castaigne is still there, leaning to the frame.

"Better?" he asks, smiling.

"Much better," she says, nodding slowly. "You have been really kind," she adds, strangely mellow.

"Do I know you from somewhere?" he asks her.

She smiles again, taking a step forward.

"From, like, apartment 4D?" she asks back.

She straightens her shoulder and pushes her perky breasts forward.

"Yeah, right," he nods. "Apartment 4D," he says.

She's very close, now.

Her lids are heavy, giving her an half-awake expression.

"You know," he says, scratching his chin pensively, "I never knew there was a fourth floor to this building."

"Me neither," she grins drowsily, leaning against him. She smells of roses and musk. "Do you mind if I come in for a sec?"

She slips her firm thigh between his legs. "I feel I ought to thank you."
